EU VAT Validation (VIES) checks the VAT numbers of your customers in the European Commission's VIES register and removes VAT for verified businesses from other EU countries, while consumers and customers from your own country keep paying VAT. It plugs into PrestaShop's own tax calculation, so prices, shipping, totals and invoices follow — a VIES VAT number check and reverse charge for B2B sales in PrestaShop.
EU VAT Validation (VIES) features
- VAT number checked in VIES when a customer saves an address, when an address is saved in the back office and at checkout when the saved answer is outdated
- No VAT on products, shipping and gift wrapping for a verified business from another EU country; VAT for consumers, invalid numbers and your own country
- Typed numbers cleaned and checked against the format of each EU country before VIES is asked
- Each answer saved per VAT number and reused during the check interval (60 minutes by default)
- Timeout, limits per minute, per hour and per visitor, one retry after a VIES overload, and a pause after VIES errors, for the whole service or one country
- Grace period: a confirmed number stays verified when VIES is down, 72 hours by default
- Optional: accept a number in the right format for the country while VIES does not answer, checked again later
- Log of every request, error and held-back check, with the VIES code and the response time
- Invalid number: warn the customer and charge VAT, or refuse the address until it is corrected
- Your own VAT number sent with each check, so VIES returns a consultation number as proof
- VIES result kept with each order and shown on the back office order page
- Reverse charge note on invoices and credit slips, in the language of the order
- List of checked numbers with "Check now", manual "valid" or "invalid" marks and a manual check form
- Test mode with the VIES test service, warning about PrestaShop's old unchecked VAT number setting
- Multistore: tax settings per shop, one VIES connection for all shops; back office in English, Polish and French
